Obituary of Selwyn "Sy" Kenny

Sy died after a long painful battle with prostate cancer on Saturday, June 2, 2012 at the Brandon Regional Health Centre. He was born May 21, 1921 in Brandon, Manitoba; he was the oldest of three children. As a teen, Sy raced homing pigeons receiving a number of first place finishes for long distance and fastest times, his other hobby was Ammeter Radio, known by his HAM license for decades of VE4YW; Sy talked with many people of different nations and made a great number of friends. During World War II, he was Flight Sergeant as a tail gunner, flying in Lancaster Aircraft serving in the RCAF. Sy worked for CP Express from just before his enlistment in 1942 till his retirement in 1982. He met and married Maude Ivey in 1949 and is survived by his two sons Dave Kenny, daughter-in-law Teri and his grandchildren Philip and Jeffrey of St. Albert, AB. As well as his son, Rod and his husband David Blue of Vancouver, BC. Sy had a passionate interest in archeology, working on several digs with Richard MacNish and Westley Wong. He enjoyed camping and traveling throughout the United States and Canada with many adventures along the way. He taught radio classes to Air Cadets from 1957 to 1975. Sy was predeceased by his wife Maude in 2002, his brother Frank in 2003 and his sister Jean in 1969. He was a good neighbour and great friend. He shall be deeply missed. A graveside service will be held at 2:00 p.m. on Thursday, June 7, 2012 at Brandon Cemetery with Rev. Laird Russell-Yearwood of Central United Church officiating. In lieu of flowers, please make a donation to the Canadian Cancer Society of Manitoba, or to the Prostate Cancer Division.
