Obituary of Leroy "Casey" Pearsall
PEARSALL: Leroy (Casey) Pearsall (1914 - 2012). Peacefully on Saturday, June 9th, 2012 at the Valleyview Care Centre in Brandon, Manitoba, Casey Pearsall passed away in his 98th year. Casey was born on September 27, 1914 in Loverna, SK to Raymond and Edna Pearsall. At the death of his mother in 1917, Casey was brought to Elkhorn, MB to live with his Grandmother, Mrs. J.A. Niven (sister of George and Peter Lidster, owners of the local butcher shop in Elkhorn). It was here that he spent his childhood, received his schooling and in 1932, entered the butcher shop of his Uncle George and together with George's son, Ken, was taught the trade of a butcher. To quote Casey "Many were the good times we had in learning our profession and we were fortunate in having as our teacher the very best and finest, my Uncle George Lidster." Casey left Elkhorn in 1940 to join the services in Winnipeg but was not accepted due to a medical condition. He worked in Winnipeg for a spell and in 1943, married Miss Jean Lund, a school teacher from Elkhorn. They purchased the butcher shop in Oak Lake in 1944, operated it until 1954 at which time the business was sold and they moved to Virden and operated a shop there until 1962. The Pearsalls then moved to Brandon in retirement. Jean passed away in 1968. Casey married Gladys Duncan of Brandon in 1971 and they spent 30 wonderful years together until Gladys' death in 2001. Casey and Gladys spent many years travelling the world and still found time to spend their winters in Mesa, Arizona. They both enjoyed music and attended many dances with their "Snowbird" friends in Mesa. Casey was very proud of his Gladys and was always the gentleman in escorting her about for 30 years. Golf was a passion of Casey's and he enjoyed the game most of his life right up to the age of 88. Casey is survived by his stepsons Bruce (Linda) Duncan and their children Jodi, Kristi and Tim and their families; and Barry (Carol) Duncan and their children Ian, Patrick and Kathy and their families. He is also survived by a special niece and nephew Jeanette and Rudy Stritz and their families. The family would like to thank the staff at Valleyview Care Centre and Victoria Landing for the wonderful care and treatment of Casey in his later years and also a big thank you to Rudy and Jeannette Stritz, Norm and Gail Popein, Tom and Fran Perrin and Nicole and Sherry of Transitions for their many acts of kindness throughout the years. As per Casey's wishes, no formal funeral service will be held. A private family service and interment will occur at the Elkhorn Cemetery and will be officiated by Mr. Jamie Berry. In lieu of flowers, donations to Valleyview Care Centre, 3015 Victoria Avenue, Brandon, MB, R7B 2K2 would be appreciated.
