Obituary of Shirley Shopland
SHOPLAND: Shirley Shopland passed away at the Brandon Regional Health Centre on Sunday, January 3, 2021 at the age of 62 years. Shirley was born on June 30, 1958. Her mother, Ingred 'Grace' (Wakefield) and dad Jim brought baby Shirley Darlene home from the Brandon General Hospital to their farm home, south of Brandon. She joined her brother Gary and later by brother Garth. Shirley is survived by Gary and Garth (Thelma); and she was predeceased by her mother Grace on December 18, 2007 and her father Jim on October 28, 2017. Shirley grew up on the Shopland family farm, loving kittens, dogs, and baby calves. She preferred helping her mom or her dad work in the barn rather than the house. She was happiest bottle feeding an orphaned baby calf to helping with housework. Shirley gathered friends and remembered them. Shirley (Munroe) Kauk, was her childhood friend for life and two of her forever friends were Sandy Brown and Stephanie Cruickshanks.
Her friend, Stephanie wrote, "My friend was uniquely different than most of us, loved the brightest nail polish usually with sparkles, loved the blingiest bling you could find in the costume jewelry section. Loved to colour, princesses mostly. Loved dogs, tolerated cats, and despised horses; she seemed rather indifferent to cows much to my dismay. She loved crafting, Disney movies, soap operas and farm life. She was atrociously stubborn most of the time; often said things out loud that I wished she hadn't, was truthful and loyal. Life didn't pass her the easiest path but if you were her friend you definitely knew it. She adored my family and claimed my kids and told people we shared my husband. The release from your broken body must be amazing. Breathe easy my friend you mattered to me. Keep the movie rolling until we can watch together again'..."
Shirley leaves behind her ‘pen pal' aunts and uncles Louise and Bob Shopland, Kelowna; Irene and Joe Shopland, Rocanville. She will be remembered by her Brandon aunts and uncles; Darlene, Dorothy, Leah, Linda, Blaine and Garth and many cousins who survive her.
A big 'Shirley hug' to all the staff on the second floor of Fairview Home and to all her caregivers, who she considered family; let us always remember her usual ending to a conversation ... "I love you guys”.
