Dwight Finlayson

Obituary of Dwight Finlayson

FINLAYSON: 1944-2021. Dwight Finlayson passed peacefully in the presence of family at the Valleyview Care Home in Brandon, MB on Wednesday, January 6, 2021. He will be lovingly remembered by his siblings: Lloyd (Jackie), Donna, Kathleen (Victor), Orville (Joanne), Lionel and many nieces and nephews.  He was predeceased by his sister Charlotte and brother Colin. Dwight grew up in Brandon. He moved to Calgary at the age of 15, where he went to trade school and became a bricklayer working alongside his brothers. While he worked on many buildings in Alberta and Manitoba, he took pride in one of his last projects - Central United Church on 8th in Brandon because of the detailed brickwork and arches he did. He married Sharon Teney at the age of 26 and had two daughters Shelly (Steven) and Melanie (Michael) whom he took great pride in and loved dearly. He moved back to Brandon in 1993 where he spent the remainder of his life. For the past 15 years he enjoyed trips to Calgary to visit family, Christmas eves with his siblings, cribbage playoffs with his girls, and special times with his granddaughters (Ceili and Alaina) whom he loved to brag about. He loved country music and in his younger years could be found singing and dancing at the Crystal Hotel or North 40. His easygoing nature and sense of humor made him well liked. He had a  strong-willed character but was also kind and compassionate helping others out when he could. Even while his body was failing, he kept his spirits up and his will strong to finish his race victoriously. He said “don’t feel sorry for me, I had a good life”. He didn’t want a service but on Saturday, January 16th at 7:00 p.m. (all time zones), we invite family and friends to lift a glass in cheer and remember the good times, stories, jokes, and songs you shared with him. His family wishes to thank the nurses and staff at Valleyview Care Centre for their compassion and the exceptional care he received especially in his final days. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in his memory to the Valleyview Resident Council Van Fund, 3015 Victoria Ave., Brandon, MB, R7B 2K2.
