McLEOD: Dorothy Mae McLeod passed away peacefully with family by her side at the Assiniboine Centre on Sunday, March 7, 2021 at the age of 96 years. Mom was born Sept. 17, 1924 on the family farm north of Cartwright, MB. Proud parents of their first child were George and Merle Archibald. She received her education in the Cartwright district and then went to work at Moore's Store in Cartwright. She met my Dad Angus McLeod and must have made quite an impression because they were married on Oct. 24, 1945 in Killarney, MB. Dorothy and Angus made a home for themselves at Cranmer Siding, MB, where dad ran the United Grain Growers elevator. While living at Cranmer Siding both their sons were born, Wayne in 1948, and Keith in 1951. The family moved to Brandon in 1956 when dad started and ran the first in a series of businesses that he owned and operated during his lifetime. Mom worked first in retail and then found her niche as a dental assistant for Dr. W.R Harwood, where she worked until retirement. A lifelong member of the Rebecca Lodge and of the United Church, Dorothy spent many hours doing volunteer work for the Red Cross, UCW at Central United, and the BGH Nearly New Shop. She loved going to the Nearly New and did so weekly until Covid 19 intervened. Mom dearly loved her family and friends and will be greatly missed by many, many people. She was happiest when surrounded by family, especially at Christmas. Her favorite place was her cottage at Clear Lake where she and dad spent many happy summers after retiring. Dorothy was predeceased by her parents, George and Merle Archibald; her youngest, son Keith and her husband, Angus. She is survived by her sister, Ferne Duncan (Stewart) of Calgary; her son, Wayne (Marion) and their children Robyn (Rick) Denbow (Reese, Ryan) and Tom (Tara-Lyn)McLeod (Olivia, Kara); daughter-in-law, Brenda McLeod and her children Chris (Jody) McLeod (Gemma, Angus), Trisha (Geoff) Paterson (Rylee, Easton). She also leaves to mourn many nieces, nephews, and cherished relatives and friends. A Celebration of Dorothy’s Life was held at Brockie Donovan Chapel on March 12, 2021. Interment followed at the Brandon Cemetery. Donations in memory of Dorothy may be made to the Canadian Cancer Society, 415-1st Street, Brandon, MB, R7A 2W8 or the Nearly New Shop, 601-9th Street, Brandon, MB, R7A 4B3.
