Obituary of Lucy Omamuyovwi Pedro

Losing a parent is one thing but it is nothing in comparison to losing both parents. It is like living in a house with the ceiling removed so that the rain and all types of weather conditions are allowed to hit you hard. Parents are the only people that are capable of giving you, unconditional love.

My Mother was the most interesting person I know. She was funny without even trying to be. She was a connoisseur of the funniest pidgin English jokes and quotes. She was a Sunday School teacher, very proud of being head of Sunday school in her local church. Every Saturday night, she would prepare for her messages religiously. For years, we held house fellowship every Wednesday in our house and serving God was something my Mother considered important.

My Mother was very proud to have risen to Level 17 in Lagos State Civil Service, she had an award from Fashola, the governor at that time and she hung it very clearly in our living room for everyone coming in to see.

Before all of this, she was a young girl who grew up in Abraka, Delta State, who loved to go to the disco and listen to Bob Marley. Her pictures from the 70’s and 80’s were a testament to the fact that she liked to have a good time and she would often tell me: ‘’Afuevu, you nordo shakara reach me’’.

Hit by life’s challenges of having an absentee father and being widowed early, my mom knew the importance of being strong and self-reliant. She never gave room for a situation in which she would be walked over or disregarded.

Above all the things my Mother was, the greatest of them was that she was our Mother. My siblings and I are her life’s work and she loved us fiercely. I will never let go or get over her or move on. But I will try to be strong because my Queen will not have any of this crying or moping about.
