I just learned of this yesterday from a fellow classmate. Very saddened to hear this, Mike was one of my favorite profs. I had him for many classes throughout my years at BU. I have many fond memories with Mike, topped off by sharing a bottle of champagne with him during my last exam while at BU. I have a picture of the two of us toasting our glasses. Rest in peace Mike.

I am very sorry to hear of Mike’s passing.
As I was thinking of all of the memories that I have of Mike, I realized that I remember the day that I met him for the first time like it was yesterday – he was just that type of person. Mike was a mentor for me in the first 10 years of my career and he had a huge impact on the person and the professional that I have become. He taught me a lot about people, communication, leading, thinking differently, being interested in challenging the way that we do things, and to not be afraid of the future and the many changes and opportunities that it will bring us. Mike gave me a great opportunity, and for that I will be forever thankful.
Mike had a tremendous ability to inspire others and to bring out the best in them – rare gifts for sure. He was one of the “brightest lights” I have ever met in my life and he had a remarkable impact on those around him. He has created a wonderful legacy of people that he impacted in a hugely positive way.

I worked with Mike for all of his years at BU. His happy nature and care for others was always present. I will always remember the day he sat down in my office -- the office where everyone comes to complain -- and asked what HE could do for ME. People sometimes say these nice things, but Mike stopped me in my work and reiterated that he truly wanted to know how he could be of help. It meant a lot to me then, and it’s a happy memory I will always carry. Mike suffered a heart attack that very night and we lost him for a while. His strength and determination and constant good nature was remarkable. His love of teaching and care for his students was unwavering. My deep condolences to his family and to the lucky folks who got to call him ‘friend.’

Michael's death is like a bright candle being extinguished. I am saddened to learn of his passing. I knew him from many years ago, when I was his grade 8 teacher at St. Michael's in Brandon. I remember Michael as being sincere and earnest in all he did. He also had a great sense of humor. Reading his obituary, I learned of all he had contributed to so many.
To Michael's wife and family, and to his siblings, especially Greg and Teresa (also St. Michael's students), I offer sincere condolences. I will be with you in spirit as you lay Michael to rest. May you feel God's presence through your grief, deeper than your grief. May you feel yourselves comforted by the support of family, and friends near and far.

A few years ago I made a difficult decision to move back to Manitoba from Calgary to transfer to BU after experiencing a loss in my family and breaking my back. I was a “fish out of water” at BU. Michael was my professor for two courses (perks of a small University); one for each semester I spent at BU. His passion for the material he taught, his willingness to take time out of his busy schedule to help any student that required it, and his enthusiasm for all things technical was more than phenomenal. Michael was a force. He always understood that “life comes before class” and I will never forget going to speak to him about an assignment and instead being hooked into an enthusiastic discussion about the 3D printer running all day and all things tech. Needless to say, Michael was one of the few reasons I felt welcome in a small and new University, and he went above and beyond as an educator. After speaking to my Dad about Michael and the positive experiences I had with him as a Professor that I learned he also had the pleasure of learning from Michael many years before me. Michael was an incredible Professor, a kind and impressive person, and will undoubtedly be missed by many. My condolences to his family and close friends.

I am so very sorry to read about Michael's passing. I first knew him as a small boy when we were neighbours on 3rd Street in the 60's. I lost contact with the family when we moved away and, subsequently, renewed our friendship in St. Augustine Church. You always knew when Michael was at the organ because he ended with a great flourish and it was almost roof raising. I also admired the caring way he had with his dad. So sorry he has left us far too soon. Pam Stacy (O'Brien-Moran)

A dear friend, a business mentor and the most brilliant mind that I have ever had the privilege of knowing.
With our shared love of technology, Mike and I were always eager to attend the COMDEX computer shows in Las Vegas. I have many fond memories of our times there together, but the one that stands out is when we were walking the seemingly endless booths and as usual, Mike was ahead of me, his mind rapidly absorbing the new inventions of the day. I ran ahead to catch him and dragged him back to a little obscure 10 x 10 booth, telling him on the way, that “I think this guy might be on to something.” We watched intently as the sole occupant of the booth kept plugging in and unplugging a small device into a computer socket that neither of us had seen before. While we both agreed that it was “pretty interesting”, it wasn’t until USB became mainstream that we realized that we had witnessed the birth of such a significant invention.
I spent at least two of Mike’s birthdays with him, two most memorable. We went golfing together on Mike’s 40th. With neither of us being avid golfers, the day was unforgettable as we had lots of laughs and a good visit. This year, for his 65th, Mike was able to come to our home where we quietly sat and enjoyed a lovely summer day on our patio. Without the need to state it, we were both aware that it would likely be his last.
In recent years, Mike asked me to judge the business plans of his students, a significant component of the final grades for his students. His instructions were simple. Judge them as if they are a real business and one that you were asked to invest in. Year after year, I was always astounded at the quality of the student presentations and the thoroughness of the business plans; a true testament to Mike’s ability to pass on his vast knowledge to others.
Whether a friend, a business associate, a client, a student, a loved one or simply a casual acquaintance, Mike has touched so very many and we are all so much better off for knowing him.
Rest in peace my friend.

Michael was a visionary. I remember sitting on an outdoor bench with him in Florida as he described in detail what the Internet meant to the future, our social media and our community — that was a good ten years before any of it became reality. He was a cancer survivor with a brilliant mind and big ideas. He was a beloved employer, husband, father, professor, and a valued confidante. He was also funny. He once told me that he could never use his last name for any business because he couldn’t find a building wide enough to hold the sign. Michael met adversity with dignity; and opportunity with that impish grin and boundless energy. He was a proud Polish son and productive Canadian citizen. I can only imagine how he’ll be missed. Thanks Mike for being such a bright light in this world. We were all better for knowing you.

I spoke with Michael when I was in Brandon for a pre-Christmas visit on Sunday December 5. I had learned recently of his health challenges and it was important to me to keep in touch because he was a friend during high school and university days, and because his commitment to being our student council president during the final year of Harrison high school’s existence made a huge difference in my life and that of other students. As students new to Brandon, my sister Val I enrolled at Harrison because I was told it had wonderful school spirit and that proved to be so right, thanks to Michael and his leadership of its student council. He led the way to planning many inclusive activities that welcomed the contributions and involvement of all students, even as he battled Hodgkin’s lymphoma. During our university years he remained a good friend and I was very glad to have the benefit of knowing him and Bev during those years, and Mike’s sister Deb. I was glad to share a cup of coffee with him a couple of years ago and to keep in touch periodically. Last week’s conversation allowed me to reaffirm my gratitude for his kindness and inclusivity in a way that made a world of difference. I hope the coming days and weeks are good to his wife and family and that they are surrounded by the love and friendship of people who remember Mike for his spirit, his intellect, and his commitment to living the best life possible.
