Obituary of Phyllis Gillespie

GILLESPIE: Phyllis Marion Gillespie (Heselwood) was a caring wife, mother, grandmother, sister and aunt with many dear friends. It is with great sadness we announce her passing at the Calgary South Health Campus on Saturday, April 23, 2022 at age 87. She was born to John and Isabelle Heselwood on July 4, 1934 in the Katrime area. After attending the one room Squirrel Creek School and graduating from MacGregor Collegiate, she attended the Provincial Normal School (Tuxedo) in 1953-54 thus obtaining her teaching certificate. Later she attended Brandon University graduating in 1975 with her Bachelor of Arts.  Phyllis taught school for more than 34 years, mostly for the Brandon School Division at Fleming, King George, George Fitton, and J.R. Reid schools. She was especially fond of teaching elementary grade students. Phyllis was an avid gardener, crafter, knitter and a gifted quilter. She enjoyed travel, including trips to Hawaii, Europe, Australia, Mexico, and Turks and Caicos in her retirement years. The family also spent many summers making memories at their Brandosa Beach cottage. For many years Phyllis was a member of White Star of Jerusalem while also supporting her husband’s memberships in the Masons and Shriners. She is survived by her son, Bruce (Kim), grandson Michael of Calgary; brother, Lawrence (Linda) Heselwood of MacGregor and their families: Shannah (Don) Nicoll, MacGregor, Tannis (Gord) Kirkwood, Kelowna, Scot (Shelly) Heselwood of Brandon and all their families. She was especially proud of all her great nieces and nephews.  Phyllis was pre-deceased by her husband William John “Gus” in 1985, parents John (1967), Isabelle (1980), and brother Edward (1998). A graveside service will be held at the Brandon Cemetery on Monday, July 4, 2022 at 1:00 p.m. Although she was a great lover of flowers she preferred that your generosity would be better used toward Diabetes Canada, 401 - 1 Wesley Avenue, Winnipeg, Manitoba, R3C 4C6, or CancerCare Manitoba, 1160-675 McDermot Avenue, Winnipeg, MB, R3E 0V9, or the Heart & Stroke Foundation, 1379 Kenaston Blvd., Winnipeg, MB, R3P 2T5.
