SMITH: Dorothy Alicene
April 30, 1926 – August 24, 2022
Dorothy (nee Taylor) Smith passed away peacefully at Fairview Personal Care Home in Brandon on Wednesday, August 24, 2022 at age of 96 with her family by her side.
Dorothy was born in Minnedosa on April 30, 1926. She spent much of her life in and around Minnedosa working several years at the Red and White Store as a young girl of seventeen. In 1948, at age 22, she married the love of her life, Allan “Al” Smith (deceased July, 2021). Allan and Dorothy were married for 73 years. During their married life, Al and Dorothy moved to/from Brandon, Winnipeg, Kenora, Ignace, Moose Jaw, Estevan, Regina and Saskatoon, all courtesy of the CPR. During all the transfers, it was Dorothy who ensured the family remained focused on the challenge of re-establishing themselves into the new community and schools.
Dorothy is well-known for her musical talents playing piano, guitar and harmonica entertaining at family gatherings, reunions and often in personal care homes in Brandon. Throughout her life, music was an important element. She attended hundreds of musical concerts, festivals, even travelled to Nashville several times.
Dorothy had a loving and joyful personality. She was an out-going person with a warm and welcoming smile, always connecting with old friends and new. Over the years, she enjoyed curling, golfing, bridge. dancing and travelling. She often volunteered her time and effort with Heart & Stroke and Cancer Society.
Dorothy will be lovingly remembered by her children, Barbara (Craig) of Cobourg, ON and son, Dave (Sheryl) of Saskatoon, SK; by her granddaughter, Monique (Andre) of Whitby, ON; grandson, Jean-Paul (Lindsay) of Whitby, ON; and great-grandchildren: Jacob, Audric, Abby and Julia. Lovingly remembered by sister, Bette (nee Taylor) and Rob Johnson of Hamiota, MB; sister, May Simpson (nee Taylor) of Penticton, BC.; and many nieces, nephews, cousins and their families from BC, AB, MB, SK & ON.
A Celebration of Dorothy’s Life will be held at the Brockie Donovan Chapel, 332 8th Street, Brandon, MB on Friday, August 26, 2022, at 1:00 pm. Interment will follow at Rosewood Memorial Gardens. Donations in memory of Dorothy may be made to the Heart & Stroke Foundation, 1379 Kenaston Blvd., Winnipeg, MB, R3P 2T5.
