News of Rev. Dr. Paul Shore's passing has just reached me. I was his colleague at Saint Louis University for five years in the early 00s. As an art historian of Central Europe, I had a great deal of scholarly overlap with him and I recall many long lunches in St Louis in which we bantied about plans and ideas of all kinds. We kept in touch after I left to join another institution, and we were able to see each other in Vienna several times in the following years. We lost touch once he moved to Canada, but I still followed him from afar, checking out his academic webpages and trying to keep up with his lengthy publication output.
Paul was a very, very rare human being. At once frightfully intelligent, indeed utterly devoted in every way to the life of the mind, but somehow at the same time also the fun guy next door whom you'd love shoot the breeze with over sandwiches. His sense of humor was wonderful and I smile even now thinking about how funny he could be. His reach among Central European scholars was incredible, respected seemingly everywhere and constantly giving lectures at one educational institution after another in multiple lands. I saw that an issue of the Journal of Jesuit Studies will be dedicated to him, which is as fitting an honor as I can imagine for such a learned, likeable, and wonderful human being.

I only today learned of Paul's passing. I knew him in his early years of professorship at Moorhead State University in Moorhead, Minnesota. He was just 30, and I was an undergrad in my early twenties. I was an elementary education major there, and he was a professor in one of my courses. He also lived in our neighborhood and, amusingly, had moved to Moorhead without a car, thinking it would be a lot like Portland. When I realized that he was taking a taxi cab to get groceries, I offered my services and we went grocery shopping together. Over the course of weeks and months, we became great friends. I enjoyed his company thoroughly while he was in town, and we corresponded occasionally over the decades following. He had a great mind and a great wit. He always rooted for me without judgment even though I know he thought I could have chosen the academic path and I opted instead for a career in the K12 public school system.
Over the decades, we corresponded by email a few times a year on every topic ranging from educational theory to politics to art. I enjoyed my correspondence with him, and was stunned and saddened to learn of his passing. What a remarkable bright light Paul was. I will think of him often. I wish love and peace to his family. I'm so sorry for your loss.

It was with deep sadness that we received the news of the death of Professor Paul Shore, whom we had the privilege of hosting at our centre last spring.
He will be remembered as a very kind and good man and an outstanding scientist.
May he now rest in peace in the arms of our Lord.
