Obituary of Alice Olive

OLIVE: Alice Katherine (nee Henderson) widow of the late John Olive of Oak Lake passed away peacefully with family by her side at the Hamiota and District Health Centre on April 28, 2023 in her 90th year. Alice was born and raised at Oak Lake Beach, middle child of Alex and Mabel (Fuller) Henderson.

She attended Sandhurst, Lansdowne and Oakwood High schools, and took her post- secondary education at Brandon College, Tuxedo Teacher’s College and later Brandon University. She was a school teacher for just over 30 years, teaching at Woodbend School, Bloomsbury School and many years as a grade 1 teacher at Oak Lake School.

Alice was the first chairperson of the Oak Lake and Area Foundation. She was a life member of the Oak Lake Agricultural Society as well as Oak Lake Ladies Golf. She was also a member of the Oak Lake Golf Club and the Fort la Bosse Retired Teachers group. She enjoyed cross country skiing, curling, gardening, knitting, and crocheting as well as golfing. Jack and Alice snowmobiled in the winter. They traveled to the South Pacific visiting Australia and New Zealand. They traveled Canada and the US and cruised the Panama Canal. Alice resided in Oak Lake until Jack’s passing. Then she moved to Rotary Villa for the last few years of her life.

Alice is survived by her daughter, Patti (Bev) Patterson of Hamiota; her son, Ken (Anna) Olive of Sylvan Lake,  Alberta; grandchildren: Shawn (Emilie) Patterson, Laura, and Julie Olive; great-grandchildren, Molly and William Patterson; her sister, Phyllis (Murray) Kennedy; brother, Bill Henderson; her sister-in-law, Elaine Snelling as well as many nieces and nephews.

She was predeceased by her husband, John; father and mother, Alex and Mabel; father and mother-in-law, Wellington and Hazel Olive; sisters and brothers-in-law, Marge (James) Orr, Jessie (Charlie) Stewart, and Dorothy Bussey, also her brother, John Henderson and nephews, George Watt and Bill Stewart. She was also predeceased by her brother and sisters-in-law, Jim (Betty) Olive, Joyce Olive and Nora Scott.

A Funeral Service was held at the Oak Lake United Church on Wednesday, May 3, 2023. Donations in honour of Alice may be made to the Oak Lake Foundation, Box 133, Oak Lake, MB, R0M 1P0 or to the Hamiota and District Health Centre “Palliative Care Committee”, Box 757, Hamiota, MB, R0M 0T0.
