I was shocked to find Ken's obituary in the newspaper when I came home from holidays. Although we lost touch after he left the Portage area, he was my best friend growing up in Westbourne.

Uncle Kenny you were was such an integral part of those visits to Manitoba to visit the relatives. As my sister Mel shared, those trips from BC to Manitoba have become epic in our minds. Family reunions, barbeques, singing, laughter, stories, hugs, and tears. I am so glad my sons Eli and Zeke got travel with Grandma and Grandpa (Linda and Garth) and meet Uncle Kenny. I was trying to find a photo that shouted: this is my Uncle Kenny as I remember, not as a son, brother, or dad but as an uncle, my uncle, but no luck; they are of all of us, the cousins; Melinda and Heather, Leanne and Ronny, Andrea, Grandpa Burnell. You were a big, warm , welcoming presence. You will be missed and remembered by this niece, hugs, Carla (niece, Garth and Linda's middle daughter)

May 6, 2021, the last time I ever saw Uncle Kenny. So glad we got to meet up, even if the Covid pandemic meant we had to wear masks and stay 6 feet apart. Uncle Kenny would never miss out on a chance to spend time with family. He came to the UK once while we were living there and made a 700 km round trip on the train from York to London just to spend a day with me. I wish I could have one more of his big bear hugs. 67 is too young to die. I'll miss you, Uncle Kenny!

Here's something I've never told anybody before: when I was a little kid, Uncle Kenny and Kenny Rogers were inextricably linked in my mind. Perhaps it was his larger than life persona, his charisma or the crinkles around his eyes when he smiled. Nah, who am I kidding? It was the beard!
Every few summers, my dad Garth (Kenny's oldest brother), my mom Linda, and my sisters Carla, Kim and I would drive 8 hours a day for 3 days in a row to visit the Manitoba relatives. The road trip was brutal. My car-sick sister Kim sat up front with an empty 4 litre ice cream bucket to barf in if my dad couldn't safely stop in time for her to throw up on the side of the road. My sister Carla and I would get grumpy and complain if the other one stretched out onto their side of the car. Looking for out of province license plates and playing games like naming places starting with the letters of the alphabet helped to pass the time a little. Most of the time we just listened to music and sang along. Country music featured heavily. Dolly Parton, Kenny Rogers, Sylvia, Oak Ridge Boys, Willie Nelson and all the classic country artists.
We'd pack in a lot of visits while we were in Manitoba, being told to sit quietly at some of the elderly relatives' houses while the adults talked about boring stuff.
Going to Uncle Kenny's was different. It was fun there. There would be music, laughter and liveliness. Uncle Kenny was smart, funny and great at making people feel at ease. He was the consummate host. He loved organizing parties, family reunions and barbecues. Whenever all five Burnell brothers got together, the atmosphere got even more upbeat. Garth, Clint, Brad, Kenny and Randy would talk a mile a minute, teasing each other and telling stories.
Each time I went to Manitoba, I would learn a bit more about the Burnells, Pulaks and Asmundsons.
As an adult, I gained a completely different appreciation for Uncle Kenny. How did he manage to keep his positive outlook and good humour after his mom died on Christmas Eve when he was just a little boy? What remarkable resilience he had to carry on after his wife Marla died when their daughters Melinda and Heather were young. Kenny was human, so he must've had doubt and pain. However, the overall impression he gave was one of dedication to family relationships, zest for life and a glass-half-full attitude.
Obviously, other people noticed how special he was, or he wouldn't've been able to convince two strong, smart, good-natured women to marry him. Or raise such great kids. I'm so glad Hellen came to be part of the Burnell bunch.
No one who loved Kenny will ever forget him. I'm lucky, because every time I hear a Kenny Rogers song, I automatically think of my lovable uncle with the big laugh and the big heart.
I'll miss you, Uncle Kenny, but I'll never forget you.
Melanie

To Hellen and all of Ken's family: I am so sorry for your loss.
Ken's mom, Anna, was the eldest sister of my mom, Kristjana (Zaporzan),
We were kids together. We lived in Winnipeg but visited Uncle George's family in Westbourne many times.
The memories are vivid:
Family barbeques; Perry Park; getting a cold drink at the army surplus store (Patterson's ?); Munroe's Store on the highway; Whitemud River.
I remember Ken as a whip-smart boy; soft spoken; slightly mischievous and with a good sense of humour.
I hadn't seen Ken for many years - probably the last time was at Aunty Jo's service in Winnipeg in 2012.
We think we have all kinds of time, and then we drift apart with our own lives.
All my love to Ken's family.
- Ron Zaporzan (cousin - Calgary AB)
