It is with a very sad heart that I am posting a tribute to Dawson on this page. I moved here from Nova Scotia in 1985 and one of the very first people that took me on as a friend was Dawson. He has been part of my Manitoba life all during that time. I always admired Dawson as a great business person who was meticulous in all that he did. During the years he hired a couple of my in-laws and eventually ended up hiring me to do computer work in the businesses that he and Addy operated. I always was proud to say that I helped him to know exactly how much the peas on the daily special plate cost. At one point during his business career, when he and Addy were opening Switzer’s, Dawson thought that I would make a great bartender. What a mistake that was! I lasted just one shift and decided that I was better off doing computer work for him rather than being in the public eye trying to carry drinks across the floor of the lounge. As fate would have it, later on Dawson and I worked together in my business. He was such a huge help to me and my business I can never repay him for that. His insight and work ethic were second to none. We always discussed and analyzed all of my business decisions. When we ventured into the fire fighting business Dawson was the only person that I could leave the everyday operation of my business with and be comfortable that all would be just fine when I returned. Together we built a self contained all inclusive fire fighting solution that the Province of Manitoba began to rely upon for fast, consistent and complete fire fighting solutions. That system was one of a kind, at the time, in North America. I remember many days when both Dawson and I were dead tired and should have both had a nap … but as long as one of us was doing something at the yard site the other would keep going.
I was happy that Dawson and I had time to visit wth one another offer the last two years during Dawson’s illness. He tackled that with the same grit and determination that he had with everything else in his life. I was so proud of his attitude and tenacity. I will always be sad and shed a tear when I think for a moment during the day that Dawson is no longer with us. I have always said though that the best thing we can do when we lose someone close to us is to remember them always, tell stories about them and their life and continue to miss them being in your life. Dawson will definitely be all of those things to the people that were close to him. I will always remember you my friend.
