Obituary of June Cumming

June Marie Cumming

June Marie (nee Culbertson) passed away peacefully at the Brandon Regional Health Centre on Friday, August 11, 2023 at the age of 86 years.

June was born to John and Sophia Culbertson, she was the youngest of 9 children. Growing up in Brandon she attended Earl Oxford and Brandon Collegiate. June continued to reside in Brandon into adulthood and worked at Massey Harris, Brandon Packers and Anglo Oil. On April 20, 1957, June married Garth Cumming.  When June welcomed her children she decided she was best needed at home and became a stay at home Mom to her kids but continued to do the books for Cumming Bros.

June’s family was an important part of her life but she always managed to find time to volunteer in the community. She spent many hours volunteering at various bonspiels at Riverview Curling Club, the Shrine Car Patrol Ladies and many tournaments at Riverdale Golf Course.

Travelling was a passion of June’s. She travelled to Hawaii, Mexico and all of the United States and Canada, she especially loved spending her winters in Mesa, Arizona where she enjoyed many golf games. Soaking up the sun at her cabin at Rivers Lake, swimming and water skiing were some of her favourite things to do during the summer months. She always made time for her friends, often having campfires or going to western parties. The winter months found June attending many Wheat Kings games, she was a fan for many years. Out of all the places she loved to travel, things she loved to do, her family and friends were the most important thing to her in the world.

June is survived by her husband of 66 years, Garth; daughter, Kristen Empey and her family, Jessica Empey (Dan Lefave), Alistair, Genevieve, Alexandra Empey (Wyatt Anderson); son, Chad Cumming (Rachelle Mazer) and their children, Niklas Cumming, Zakary Cumming and Lauren Mazer; brother-in-law, Bill Cumming (Gloria) and sister-in-law, Belva McKinnon and May Culbertson.

She was predeceased by her parents, John and Sophia; brothers, John (Agnes) Culbertson, Wesley (Gail) Culbertson, Oswald (Elva) Culbertson, Joseph Culbertson and Robert (Agnes) Culbertson; sisters, Lillian (Art) Westbury, Ethel (Wes) Morton and Maybel (John) Clark; as well as her good friends, Joe and Joan Chamberlain who were her honorary family members.

A Celebration of June’s Life will be held at The Backyard on Aberdeen, 1624 13th Street on Friday, September 8, 2023 at 3:00 p.m.

In lieu of flowers, donations in memory of June may be made to Brandon Regional Health Centre Foundation “Palliative Care”, 150 McTavish Ave E., Brandon, MB, R7A 2B3.
