Obituary of Thelma Souliere

THELMA CATHERINE SOULIERE (HALL) of Winnipeg, formerly of Brandon, Manitoba, passed away on Saturday, January 13, 2024 at the St. Norbert Personal Care Home in Winnipeg at the age of 89 years.

Thelma was born in Brandon, to Herbert and Katherine Hall on September 24, 1934. She was the youngest of four children.  She attended high school at St. Michael’s Academy.  As a young woman and wife, Mom worked as a Sales Clerk at Patmore’s Florists until motherhood became her full-time commitment.

She enjoyed five and ten pin bowling in the women’s league and joined lawn bowling in later years.  Mom and Dad curled for a number of years at various rinks before becoming founding members of Riverview Curling Club.  Both enjoyed fishing, camping, gardening and travelling.  They enjoyed playing board games and had many evenings of fun with friends and family.    Mom loved cooking, canning and preserving food grown in her gardens.  She was an excellent cook and homemaker and was pleased to host and serve family and friends.  Some her favourite meals to prepare were for Christmas, Easter and Thanksgiving.  Special treats were butter tarts, date square and bridge dainties.  Comfort go to foods were soft-boiled eggs in a glass, stews with dumplings, vegetable soup and roast beef dinners with yorkshire pudding are just a few to mention.   In her spare-time she loved to knit, sew, garden, read and travel.  Mom was involved in the women’s Auxiliaries in St. Paul’s United, Trinity United and McDiarmid Drive Alliance churches in Brandon and Southdale Alliance church in Winnipeg.  She was a life-long member of the United Commercial Traveller’s.

Family was everything to Mom and they brought her much joy. She cherished her four daughters, loved their spouses and grandchildren and adored her great-grandchildren who were a joy and a blessing.  She always gave God the praise and glory for accomplishments in her and her families’ lives.  

Thelma is survived by her four daughters and their spouses: Catharine (Jamie) Dunlop of Winnipeg, Brenda (Hubert) Carriere of Winnipeg, Arlette (Abe) Knelsen of Rivers, and Doncella (Paul) Hallatt of Winnipeg. Eight grandchildren: Daniel (Sarah) Carriere, Eric Carriere (Monica Jativa), Joshua (Audrey) Dunlop, Luke Dunlop, Tim (Sierra) Knelsen, Meghan Knelsen, Ryan Hallatt and Kevin Hallatt.  Six great-grandchildren: Ruby Dunlop, Eleanor Dunlop, Teddy Dunlop, Judah Carriere, Noah Carriere, and Adelaide Knelsen.  Sister-in-law Gladys Hall and nieces and nephews: Beatrice Allen, Linda Spears, Karen McGonigal (Darryl Lickers), Grant Hall and Arlene Hall. She is preceded in death by her husband, James (Jim) Souliere; parents: Herbert and Katherine Hall; and siblings(spouses): Bert Hall, Norman (Claudia) Hall, Roy Hall, Les Hall, Nancy (Cy) Cowan, Rita (Robert) Allen and  Ernie Hall a twin to Rita who died in infancy and sister-in-law Audrey Hall; two nieces and five nephews: Marlene Cowan Lang, Don Cowan, Douglas Cowan, Robert “Bob” Allen,  Ron Hall,  Raymond Hall and Denise Loughlin Hall.

The Funeral Service for Thelma Souliere will be held at Brockie Donovan Funeral Home, 332 8th Street, Brandon on Wednesday, January 24, 2024 at 12:30 p.m. with Carla Davidson officiating. Viewing will be held prior to the service Interment will follow at the Brandon Cemetery, 1901 18th Street, Brandon. 

Memorial donations in memory of Thelma Souliere may be made to The Lung Association, Manitoba, 825 Sherbrook Street, Room 204, Winnipeg, Manitoba, R3A 1M5.  The family wishes to extend their gratitude to Dr. Ian Maharaj and the dedicated and compassionate nurses and staff at the St. Norbert Personal Care Home, Winnipeg.  Mom treasured you all.
