Dorothy Hrymak

Obituary of Dorothy Hrymak

Dorothy Hrymak (nee Lacey)

Dorothy Hrymak passed away peacefully at the Fairview Personal Care Home on Monday, April 1, 2024 at the age of 96.  She will be lovingly remembered as a kind, caring wife, mother, grandmother, sister, and friend.

Dorothy is survived by her son Brent (Heather), daughter Kim (Marc), son Jeff (Jodi), and granddaughters Carmen, Haley, Emma, and Bria.  She was predeceased by her parents William and Amelia Lacey, husband James (Jim), sisters Norma, Peggy, Mary, and brothers George, Art, Bill, Harry, and Jimmy.

Dorothy was born in Brandon on December 13, 1927.  She was the youngest of her siblings and maintained a close relationship with them throughout her life.  As a young woman, Dorothy worked in her father’s shop, Lacey Signs, and later at the Princess Café where she met her husband, Jim.  Together, they enjoyed spending time with family and friends.  In earlier years, they spent many weekends skiing at Glenorky and Agassiz.  Through the years, much time was also spent at the farm in Erickson and their favourite spot, the cottage at Clear Lake.  Dorothy’s travels also took her outside of Manitoba including trips to BC, Spain, England, Ireland, and New York.  Dorothy and Jim shared their life together until he passed away in 2004.

Dorothy was the secretary for the 502 Wing of the Women’s Auxiliary for the Royal Canadian Air Force.   She was an avid volunteer and would often help at the school library, canteens at horse shows, the Shrine Circus, as a Beaver Scout leader, and she was a Block Parent just to name a few. She loved spending time with her grandchildren and was even a dog sitter for Kim and Marc. Dorothy was an avid bowler, she loved a good game of cards, watching curling, going to the movies, and reading The Brandon Sun from cover to cover.

Dorothy had the best sense of humour and the kindest heart.  She looked after those around her by making any space welcoming and adding laughter to the room.  She enjoyed cooking for family gatherings and will forever be remembered for her famous jellied salad.  Family meant everything to Dorothy, and she always wanted to ensure everyone was doing well.  She adored and was so proud of her granddaughters.

Dorothy will be deeply missed by her family and friends.

“Our minds still talk to you and our hearts still look for you, but our souls know you are at peace.”
