Obituary of Joan White

It is with deep sadness and much love we announce the passing of Joan Helena White on Sunday, May 26, 2024 at the Assiniboine Centre in Brandon, Manitoba at the age of 61, after a courageous battle with cancer.

She leaves to cherish her memory her two children Chelsey Geddes (Matt McLean) of Brandon, Manitoba and Dayson Geddes (Cheyenne Geddes) of Hughenden, Alberta and Joan’s beloved grandchildren, Kyla and Hayden Geddes.  Also left to mourn are her ex-partner Bob Geddes of Souris; sisters Anita White and Eileen White of Souris, PEI; brothers Jimmy White and Lenny White of Souris, PEI and brother Raymond White of Moncton, NB, in addition to numerous nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.

She was predeceased by her brother Billy White in 1971, father Reggie White in 1973, mother Kay White in 1979, sister-in-law Gen White in 1997, nephew Jonathan Carter in 2017, brother-in-law Bryan Geddes in 2018 and mother-in-law Dagny Geddes in March of 2024.

Joan was born June 7, 1962, in Charlottetown, PEI, the youngest child to Reggie and Kay White.  She grew up on a farm in Bear River, PEI and attended school in Souris, PEI until graduation.

In the early eighties, Joan followed in her brother Raymond’s footsteps and moved off the island, out west.  She landed in Lynn Lake, Manitoba where she made many special friends and connections that lasted her a lifetime.

Joan met Bob Geddes in 1984, through her good friend and Bob’s sister, Donna Geddes.  They soon moved to Leaf Rapids, Manitoba where they welcomed Chelsey in 1989 and Dayson in 1993.

While in Leaf Rapids, Joan worked at Ruttan Mine, the Leaf Rapids Public Library and True Value Hardware.  Again, she made many special friends and connections during her time in Leaf Rapids.

In 2002, Ruttan Mine in Leaf Rapids closed and Bob and Joan moved their family to Souris, Manitoba.  While in Souris, Joan was employed at Kirkup Agencies and the Souris Dental Office.  She was also employed at Accel Towing in Brandon, as well as Wal-Mart.

Throughout her life, Joan’s favourite thing was spending time with family and friends.  She made many great friends throughout her life, as she was a warm, friendly person who loved to make others laugh.  She also loved curling; it was rare she would miss a game on tv.  Some other notable hobbies included bingo, backgammon, and cooking for others.  A hidden talent she had was poetry; give her a subject and in a few hours, she could come up with a sweet, well-thought out verse or rhyme.

Joan spent the last winter staying in Hughenden, Alberta with her “little darlings”, Kyla and Hayden.  There was no place in the world she would rather be than with them.

Her last few weeks were blessed with an outpouring of love and visits from family and friends, from near and far.  She felt loved and comfortable until the end, with her daughter by her side for that moment.  She will be so missed.

Rest in Peace, we love you.

A funeral service will be scheduled at a later date.  In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the Canadian Cancer Society, 55 St. Clair Ave W, Suite 300, Toronto, ON, M4V 2Y7.
