Marjorie Barefoot

Obituary of Marjorie Barefoot

Marjorie Alice Barefoot

October 5, 1926 - July 31 2024. Residing in Golden West Centennial Lodge Mom passed peacefully in her sleep on Wednesday, July 31, 2024.

During her life she lived in Deloraine, Whitewater, Boissevain, Brandon and moved to Winnipeg just before her 90th birthday.

As a girl she loved cats, dogs and horses.  She went to Winnipeg to the Scientific School of Beauty Culture where she became a hairdresser, graduating in 1945.   She worked in Deloraine after graduating.

Marjorie was born in Morton Municipality on the farm.  At 21 years old she married William Innes Murdoch on June 12, 1947. They lived in Deloraine until they bought the store/gas station/post office in Whitewater.  They raised 3 children, Bob, Linda and Susan there.

After her father’s death in1961, and husband Bill’s death in 1962, Marge and her mother, moved the 2 story family home from Whitewater to Boissevain.  It was quite a feat.  They lived there together with Bob, Linda and Susan until Mom married Bob Barefoot on May 8th, 1965.  Marge and Bob celebrated 46 years of marriage before he passed in 2011.

Mom worked as a hair dresser, store owner, and several other jobs in her life.  She was efficient, friendly and smart at anything she did so was an asset to all businesses.  She also helped Dad at the schools doing custodial work in the evenings.    Her most important job was her family which she taught to love deeply and care for each other.

She volunteered for the Cancer society canvasing every year for more than 25 years.  She also was an active member of the Legion Auxiliary in Boissevain.

Mom loved to cook for the family and bake bread.  She loved to knit, crotchet, cross stitch, needle point, sew, play piano and dance.  We all have beautiful crocheted table cloths, mitts and all the grandchildren and great grandchildren have at least one piece of knit clothing that they have worn proudly.

Mom loved to dance and she taught us all to 2 step, waltz, polka and just move with the music.  She joined Prairie Oasis Clogging group in Brandon and they tapped their way many places including the Calgary Stampede.   She played the piano by ear and accompanied her uncle Vic, who played the fiddle, at many family gatherings.

Mom always treated all of our friends like they were family.  They were always welcome in the home.

She is the last of her generation but their legacy will be carried on by her children, grandchildren and great grandchildren.

She was always very proud of her family and their lives.  We will miss you Mom.  Rest easy.

A graveside funeral service with family and close friends will be held at the Boissevain Cemetery, on Friday, August 9, 2024 at 2:00 P.M.
