Gerald Fredrick Barnes

September 7, 1950 – January 13, 2025

It is with deep sadness that we have lost a husband, father, grandfather and brother on January 13, 2025.

Gerald Fredrick Barnes was born September 7, 1950, at Deloraine, Manitoba to parents Carl and Florence (Vere) Barnes, joining sister, Sharon.

Gerald lived his early years in Medora, Manitoba which he always considered home.  In 1963 he moved to Melita, Manitoba with his parents where he completed his high school, graduating as school president in 1968.

During his youth, sports were a favourite. He participated in hockey, baseball, softball, curling and football.  He also enjoyed outdoor activities, school dances and working at Murray’s Garage in Melita.

Gerald began his lifelong occupation in the accounting field, enrolling in the Chartered Accountants program, and articling with Donovan, Stone & Company (Dunwoody & Co.) in Brandon.  In 1973, he completed and obtained his Chartered Accountant Designation.  The next step in his occupation was to Lethbridge, Alberta where he held the position of Finance Director of the City of Lethbridge for ten years.  Returning to Brandon in 1985, for 27 years Gerald served as Assistant Secretary-Treasurer and Secretary-Treasurer for the Brandon School Division, retiring December 2011.

In 1972, Gerald married Ann Peters, celebrating 52 years together.  They had three cherished children Tanya, Shannon, and Brian.  He was very proud of their accomplishments in school and in life.  He thoroughly enjoyed attending their band concerts, sports activities, and educational award events.  Sometimes he was over-zealous at their sporting events.

The addition of two sons-in-law, a daughter-in-law, and five super grandchildren were greatly enjoyed in his life.

His volunteer activities included the Kiwanis Club of Brandon, the Canada Summer Games, Tim Hortons Brier, ushering with the Brandon Wheat Kings, member of the Hobbs Manor Board, and with Baptist Churches.  Special interests included travel with trips to Europe, China, Mexico, Cuba, Jamaica, Bahamas, the Disney parks, and favorite Hawaii.  Locally, he loved to attend antique car shows.

Surviving Gerald are his wife Ann, daughters Tanya (Michael) Cantlon, Shannon (Hugo) Barnes-Girouard, and son Brian (Christina Ferrato) Barnes; grandchildren Joshua Cantlon, Nicolas and Owen Girouard, Aubrey and Violet Barnes.  Also left to mourn his loss are Sharon Brown, sister; Elfreda Peters and Vivian Bohume, sisters-in-law; and several nieces, a nephew, and cousins.  Predeceased by his parents Carl and Florence Barnes; parents-in-law Bernhard (Ben) and Anna Peters; brothers-in-law Lloyd Brown, Bernhard (Bernie) Peters, and Victor Peters; and sister-in-law Elsie Peters.

The family would like to thank Dr. Vlok and all the palliative medical staff who went above and beyond in their care provided.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Canadian Liver Foundation (www.liver.ca) or any other charity of choice.
