Obituary of Stewart Goldstone

GOLDSTONE: Robert "Stewart" passed away peacefully, Monday, September 22nd in Brandon at the age of 91. Stewart will lovingly be remembered by his wife of 64 years, Claire – the absolute love of his life – and by his children Colin, Dean, and Ian; his daughters-in-law Joanne, Michelle and Joni; and his grandchildren Kelli, Paul, Sean, Peter, Kira, Zoe, Stephanie, and Orion. Stewart was born in Brandon June 6, 1923 into a large, vital family of 12 children, three of whom survive: Thelma, Pat and Kay. All of the children but the youngest were born in the family home on 4th Street. During the Second World War, Stewart served in the Canadian army with the 17th Field Regiment. He enjoyed a long career with the Manitoba Telephone System, retiring in 1984. He remained connected to the MTS through his involvement in the Telephone Pioneers, especially enjoying their wood carving workshop, where many toys for his grandchildren were crafted. He also travelled widely with Claire including trips to Europe and Australia. Closer to home he loved hiking with his grandchildren at Riding Mountain National Park and in the Brandon Hills. A Celebration of Stewart's life will be held on Saturday, October 4th at 2:00 p.m., First Presbyterian Church, 339-12th Street in Brandon. A private interment will follow. Flowers and cards gratefully declined. If you wish, donations can be made to the Alzheimer Society of Manitoba, 4B-457-9th Street, Brandon, MB, R7A 1K2 or the Foundation of First Presbyterian Church, 339-12th Street, Brandon, MB, R7A 4M3. Many thanks to the staff at Fairview Home, 5th Floor, for the kind and compassionate care that was shown to Stewart and our entire family.
