Obituary of Brent Martel

MARTEL: On Tuesday May 23, 2017 Brent Peter Martel passed away at the Brandon Regional Health Centre at the age of 67 years. He had been a loving husband and father and will be remembered forever in the hearts of his wife Lesley, son Matthew and daughter Stephanie and their families. Brent was born February 1st, 1950 to Steven and Phyllis Martel, the second eldest of nine children. Together he and his siblings shared many hardships and mischievous adventures growing up. Brent frequently took on the role of "big brother" babysitter to his younger brothers and sisters. He had a special affinity for children which was fostered, no doubt, by his formative years looking out for the little ones. He was forever just a "big kid" at heart! Brent was a kind and good man who appreciated the simple pleasures of life: a favourite fishing hole, a game of golf or a good meal. He never wasted time feeling resentful or bitter in spite of the difficulties which he encountered. He possessed a healthy sense of humour and always entered into the spirit of things when there was silliness afoot. Brent became legally blind when he was just forty years old but carried on by becoming a homemaker daddy, making a valiant, if somewhat unsuccessful, attempt to learn to cook. He assisted in his daughter's grade one class, learned how to golf using just his peripheral vision while finding his ball with his feet, and was a keen participant in CNIB bowling. Eventually other health issues necessitated Brent moving to Rideau Park Personal Care Home. After a period of adjustment, Brent and Lesley came to view the staff as their extended family. We are so very grateful for the kindness and care given to our loved one over the years. A memorial service to commemorate Brent's life will be held in tandem with the service for his father-in-law, Len Sandeman which takes place at Brockie Donovan Chapel, 332-8th Street, on Saturday, June 10, 2017 at 1:00 pm. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the CNIB, 354-10th Street, Brandon, MB, R7A 4G1.
