Obituary of Darryl Edward Darling

DARLING: Darryl Edward was born August 8, 1938 in Calgary, Alberta and died peacefully in Brandon, Manitoba on December 27, 2017 with family by his side. Darryl is survived by Merle Darling (nee Chambers), his wife of 55 years, daughter Carla Knott of Whakatane, New Zealand, son Brent (Glenda) of Sioux Lookout, ON and daughter Johanna (Matt) Yeo of Kenora, ON. Cherishing his memory are his four grandchildren whom he adored: Jessica, Lucy, Charles and Reese. Darryl is also survived by his brother Allan (Barb) of Ottawa, sister Sharron (John) Amy of Nanoose Bay, BC, brother-in-law Gene (Sylvia) Chambers of Red Deer, sisters-in-law Carol (Mike) Boreskie of Brandon, Lois Bjornson (Rick Saint) of Edmonton and Colleen Gillies of Brandon as well as many nieces and nephews. Darryl lived in Carstairs, AB; Yorkton, SK; Winnipeg and Brandon, MB. He graduated with his BSc (Pharm) in 1961 from the University of Manitoba. He worked at Johnston's Drugs, The Clinic Pharmacy, and Safeway Pharmacy in Brandon, and the Minnedosa Hospital Pharmacy where he retired in 2004. Darryl held memberships in the Canadian Pharmaceutical Association, Knox United Church, Seniors for Seniors, Kiwanis (charter member), Toastmasters Club 293 and Scouts Canada. Darryl enjoyed many years on the Manitoba Pharmaceutical Association Executive Council. He was awarded the Preceptor of the Year (1993), Pharmacist of the Year (1994), the Robins Bowl of Hygeia (1998) and an Honorary Life Membership (2007) by the Manitoba Pharmaceutical Association. Darryl enjoyed camping and canoeing when his children were young, spending time at the cottage at Lake Metigoshe and going on bus trips with Merle and their friends. He was also a dedicated volunteer with the Brandon Wheat Kings. He served as their volunteer medical coordinator for thirty years, and until very recently, still attended as many games as possible. Darryl was predeceased by his parents Elmer (1971) and Elizabeth (nee Breckenridge) (2003) and by his parents-in-law Russell (2003) and Evelyn Chambers (nee Myers) (2016). A memorial service was held at Knox United Church in Brandon on Wednesday, January 3, 2018 and followed by an interment was at Rosewood Memorial Gardens on Victoria Avenue West, Brandon, Manitoba. Thank you to the many doctors and care providers who supported Darryl over the years. The family would especially like to recognize the compassionate care that Dr. Mary Egan provided. Darryl considered her a friend.
