I worked with Garry during most of the summers of 1975 to 1980, while I was a "summer relief" at Brandon Mental Health Centre. Much of what I learned about patient care - principally how to treat patients with dignity - I learned from him. Garry taught me how to lift a patient from a "geri chair" without hurting my back. In 1999, while flying from Miami to NYC, an elderly woman across the aisle became anxious because the American Airlines attendants would not help her husband - a stroke victim- out of his chair, into a wheelchair and into the Airport. I did so. Garry taught me how to do this. Garry was congenial and made me laugh. Sorry to hear of your loss. John R Done, Kingston, ON

I will be forever grateful for having had the opportunity to work with Garry. When I started my career, he had such an amazing way of knowing when to teach, when to allow me to make mistakes, and when to step in. He had the ability to be a leader in a way that promoted skill building and self confidence equally. He was always 100% real and authentic - and told it like it was, good and bad! Thinking of all of his family ❤

Jo-ann, I am so sorry to hear of Garry's passing. It is far too soon and you and your family must be devastated. Garry was a special kind of guy and I had the pleasure of working with him when I first moved to Brandon, admissions, ward 7 of BMHC.
Anyone who worked with him was better for it. He was the consummate professional. You and I have enjoyed working together and fun times outside of work. My heart goes out to you now and I hope we can get together again before too long. Take care and much love to you , your kids and your beautiful grandchildren.

I was so saddened to learn of Garry's passing. Early in my career I was fortunate to have worked with Garry at CAP; he took newer staff under his wing as a patient and supportive mentor, and was a compassionate caregiver to his patients. He had a gentle, laughing way about him that made him so very likeable to all. He will be greatly missed. I am thinking of you Jo-Ann, and family, at this incredibly difficult time.

Jo-ann and family, I am so sorry to hear about the loss of this wonderful man. I feel very fortunate to have worked with Garry, if only for the first 6 months of my career before he gave up his nursing license, as the knowledge I gained from those shifts with him, have continued to serve me on a daily basis. He had special way of quietly guiding and teaching you that I so appreciated. There are many Garry-ism's and quotes, we staff still chuckle about and regularly refer to.

It is with great sadness I have learned of the passing of Garry. I was very privileged to have worked with Garry for many years. He was always there to share his knowledge and expertise to all his co-workers. It was always said if any of us wanted to know anything “just ask Garry”. Hoping your memories will guide you through this difficult time JoAnn. Susan Mann

Garry was a great guy. I had to honour of working together with Garry for many years at BMHC and CAP. As a colleague, he was the best. You knew when you worked with Garry he always had your back. He gave praise where it was warranted and told you if he thought you were wrong or about to make a mistake. As a psychiatric nurse, he was kind, compassionate and understanding a great example for those of us in the profession. Garry, you will be missed.

I first met Garry when I was a student at CAP in 1998. Garry was a wonderful mentor. He was the best RPN I have ever worked with here or up north. He set the bar very high. He was kind but firm and he was warm and dedicated. He was so knowledgeable and always patient. He was great at teaching and sharing his wisdom. I have referenced his wise words(some a little colorful) many times over the past 20+ years. His respect was something that was important to a lot of people. His smile was infectious. My warmest condolences to his family. I hope you find some comfort & pride in your memories. Take care.

We got to know Garry in 2010 when we moved to Clear Lake. We found him to be a soft spoken fellow who was indeed very fond of his family. He and Rick would have conversations about politics and I found him well versed in that area. We enjoyed our lunches when we got together in the park. To all of the Mitchell family, I know this is a really hard time for you all but keep your memories close to your hearts and know he is watching over you all.
