Obituary of Garry Mitchell

MITCHELL: The Mitchell family is saddened to announce the passing of Garry Ernest Mitchell on Saturday December 5th, 2020 at his home in Clear Lake, Manitoba at the age of 67.

Born May 24th, 1953 in Brandon to Raymond and Isabella Mitchell; he attended school at JR Reid and Vincent Massey. In his youth, he played little league baseball, gaining notoriety in the Brandon Sun Sports Section as a left-handed pitcher who pitched a no-hitter game. He graduated from the School of Psychiatric Nursing Education Program in 1973 and practiced at the Brandon Mental Health Centre until 1998 when it closed. He was instrumental in facilitating the transition of psychiatric care to the current Centre for Adult Psychiatry. He had a distinguished career of 35 years, he was committed to the concept of recovery and to multi-disciplinary conferencing and planning to ensure that clients/patients receive the best possible care. Garry personified dedication, integrity, professionalism and inspired pride in the profession of psychiatric nursing. He won the award of Excellence in Psychiatric Nursing in 2007.

Garry married his wife Jo-Ann in 1975. Their daughter Kalynn was born in 1979, followed by son Bryan in 1981 and Michael in 1983. He supported his wife’s equestrian adventures by attending many country fairs and countless hours of staying at home to watch the children. He was very involved in his children’s activities of attending the YMCA, soccer, softball, judo, and high school football. He enjoyed a game of golf, playing pinball and watching US politics. He was fond of travelling south in the winter months and especially enjoyed meeting up with friends in Puerto Vallarta the last several years. Garry and Jo-Ann raised their family on Queens Avenue until they retired to Clear Lake in 2010. Everyone has special memories with Uncle Garry at Clear Lake, as many memories of boating, tubing and fishing with his family and relatives were made. He embraced his retirement by flower gardening, growing the greenest grass and many decorative lawn ornaments, especially his Christmas light show. He often enjoyed a game of dominos with family and friends where he was frequently the winner at the end of the night. Family was very important to Garry and he was always available with guidance, support and love for everyone in his life. He enjoyed coming into Brandon from Clear Lake to go out for supper with his children and was particular fond of Chinese food. Garry relished in his role as a grandfather to his grandchildren Emma and Claire (2016) and Hannah (2019) and uncle to his nieces and nephews and great-uncle to their children.
