Obituary of Ian Doig

Here's to a life well lived.

December 30, 1933 - May 6, 2023

After a brief illness, our father James Ian Doig passed away peacefully on Saturday May 6th, surrounded by family and, of course, Robbie, his faithful canine companion of many years.

Ian was born to Marion Hales Doig and David Robert Doig in Brandon on December 30th, 1933. He leaves behind his brother Michael Doig, his three daughters Leslie, Lisa and Lynn, nine grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.

Ian attended St. John's Ravenscourt School, completed a commerce degree at University of British Columbia where he met our mother Sheila Kingham. After several years working for the Hudson's Bay Company, he returned to Brandon to work in the family business, Doig's Store, with his brother.  He retired from business after closing the Doig's Handbags and Luggage Stores.

Dad enjoyed skiing and we have fond memories of burning out the palms of our gloves on the rope tow at Glennorky and Sunday trips to Agassiz.

He was a regular for many years at the Keystone Pub where he would demonstrate his skill with a pool cue on unsuspecting newcomers.

He was an avid sports fan and could be found most afternoons in his den watching hockey, football, baseball or golf, idly scratching Robbie, a cold beer at his side.

He golfed well into his eighties with sojourns to Palm Springs where he could relax, and most importantly, work on his tan.

For the last several years, of great importance in dad's life was his good friend and neighbor Trevor (alias 'Tiger'). They passed many hours together watching the game, sharing a dram and solving the problems of the world. His friendship meant the world to Ian.

Dad was at peace these last few weeks, he felt he had led a good life and "had no regrets". He will dearly missed.

In keeping with Ian's wishes, cremation has taken place with no formal service will be held.
